Abstract:

Recent European and international initiatives, such as GMES, GEOSS and Inspire, need timely and reliable environmental information. The EU's Single Information Space for the Environment in Europe (SISE) thus aims to provide a seamless data access, exchange and service chain between environment-related resources. This networking session focused on the technical and economic challenges of providing such an information space. The discussion addressed notably the following questions:
  • Which applications require further integration and interconnectivity between existing environmental monitoring systems?
  • Which emerging applications are likely to increase the demand for more, better, or simply different types of environmental monitoring systems?
  • How much are the end users really able/ready to pay for these applications?
  • What are the options for new business models adapted to an open web of interconnected, distributed environmental services?
  • Which existing or emerging technologies could be used to build the missing infrastructure?
  • Which major technical and non-technical issues remain to be solved?
