Open Geospatial Consortium

The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc (OGC) is an international industry consortium of 351 companies (January 2008), government agencies and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available interface specifications. OpenGIS® Specifications support interoperable solutions that "geo-enable" the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT. The specifications empower technology developers to make complex spatial information and services accessible and useful with all kinds of applications.

OpenGIS® is a Registered Trademark of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc (OGC) and is the brand name associated with the Specifications and documents produced by the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc (OGC). OpenGIS specifications are developed in a unique consensus process supported by OGC industry, government and academic members to enable geoprocessing technologies to interoperate, or "plug and play".

OGC Impacts

OGC standards play a major role in in a transition process that will eventually lead to world-wide network of interoperable geo-informatics systems ("Geospatial Web). Unsurprisingly, the OGC standards are currently beeing adopted by INSPIRE, GEOSS, GMES, and other major initiatives targeting interoperability and seamless exchange of information.

SANY and OGC

OGC, and in particular the "Sensor Web Enablement" (OGC SWE) is one of the major "inherited technologies" used by SANY IP. However, the analysis and testing of the OGC SWE services performed by SANY consortium in the first project year revealed a number of issues with the current versions of the OGC SWE services.

Consequently, the SANY Consortium decided to actively contribute to the work of the OGC SWE working group. Visible results of this decision so far (January 2008) include:

  1. SANY/OGC workshop on sensor web enablement (March 2007)
  2. "Associated membership" status in OGC granted to SANY (December 2007)
  3. Presentation of the findings and discussion with other SWE group members on OGC TC meeting in Stresa (December 2007)
  4. Full day event (to be) co-organised by SANY and OSIRIS on the OGC TC meeting in Potsdam/Germany (June 2008)
