The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is a leading organisation for institutes of applied research in Germany, undertaking contract research on behalf of industry, the service sector and the government. Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is actively involved in industrial consortia seeking technical solutions to improve the competitiveness of European industry. At present, the organisation maintains about 80 research institutes with some 12,500 employees at locations throughout Germany.

The Fraunhofer-Institut für Informations- und Datenverarbeitung IITB has 160 permanent employees, of which 110 are scientists or engineers, and has annual operational costs of about 15 million € (2004). IITB develops innovative concepts and application solutions in information technology. It provides sustainable solutions of advanced control, monitoring and diagnosis systems mainly for industrial partners including SMEs. IITB has many years of experience in the design, implementation, integration and optimisation of complex fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control systems for distributed applications using modern model and knowledge based methods. Advanced information fusion techniques are used in surveillance applications as well as monitoring and control systems.
